Here’s Penumbra too! This one has made its way around the internets once or twice, but I’m stoked to finally be committing it to tape!
While World of Prophecy was recorded and pieced together over a few weeks this Autumn in California, Penumbra took us maybe close to a year from start to finish. These recordings are much less sure of themselves, more fragile maybe. We recorded a few takes in August of 2010 at my apartment in Berkeley, California, just before I moved to Brooklyn. After that it took us about a year to figure out what to do with all this junk. Slowly, with a bit of trial and error, we found our sound. Distant, soupy, unfamiliar, solitary, vague, maybe somehow basic and elemental?
Hope ya like it!
(The cover art is of a Bulgarian Pomak bride wearing traditional wedding garb, circa 1936. During the ceremony, it’s customary for the groom to slowly remove many layers of adornments and makeup in order to actually see the bride. One bit of text on the internet says that this is to emphasize slow and gentle appreciation of the bride’s beauty. More info here and here, more photos here, here and here.)
